How to write a check
To write a check, date it, write the payee's name, enter the amount in numbers, write the same amount in words followed by the cents as a fraction over 100, add an optional memo, and sign the bottom-right line.
Checks are still required for rent, deposits, some government payments, and plenty of bank bonus offers that want a funding check. A check is only valid when the written amount and numeric amount agree and the signature matches the bank's records. If they disagree, the written words win.
Step by step
1.Date line, top right
Write today's date. Postdating does not reliably stop a bank from cashing it early.
2.Pay to the order of
Write the full legal name of the person or business. Draw a line through any leftover space so nothing can be added.
3.Numeric amount box
Write the amount in digits, for example 1,250.00. Start hard against the left edge of the box.
4.Written amount line
Spell out the dollars and write the cents as a fraction, for example One thousand two hundred fifty and 00/100. Strike through the remaining space.
5.Memo line
Optional, but useful. Note the invoice, unit number, or account this payment covers.
6.Signature line
Sign exactly as the bank has your signature on file. An unsigned check is not payable.

Common questions
How do you write cents on a check?
Write the cents as a fraction over 100 on the written line, for example and 45/100. Use 00/100 for a whole dollar amount.
Does a check expire?
Personal checks are generally considered stale after six months and a bank may refuse them, though it is not required to. Cashier's checks and government checks follow different rules.
Can I write a check with no money in the account?
No. The check will bounce, your bank will likely charge a returned item fee, and the payee may charge one too.
