What counts as a direct deposit?
A qualifying direct deposit is normally an ACH credit from an employer, payroll provider, pension, or government agency that arrives with a payroll transaction code. Transfers from your own other bank accounts usually do not count.
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in bonus hunting. Two banks can use identical words in their terms and enforce them completely differently, because what the bank actually reads is the ACH transaction code and the originator name attached to the deposit.
Step by step
1.Read the exact wording in the offer terms
Look for the phrase qualifying direct deposit and any list of excluded sources such as person to person payments or transfers from the same bank.
2.Prefer real payroll
Splitting your paycheck through your employer's payroll portal is the most reliable option, and many offers allow splitting across two banks.
3.Treat everything else as uncertain
Payments from brokerages, gig platforms, and money apps sometimes carry a payroll code and sometimes do not, and banks change their matching rules without notice.
4.Give yourself a margin
Send the first deposit well before the deadline so you can still fix a failed attempt inside the qualification window.
5.Keep proof
Screenshot the posted transaction and the offer terms. Most denied bonuses are recovered by a polite secure message with those two things attached.

Common questions
Does a transfer from my other bank count as a direct deposit?
Usually not. Most banks check for a payroll style ACH code, and a personal transfer carries a different code even when the dollar amount matches.
Does Zelle or Venmo count as a direct deposit?
Almost never for bonus purposes. Person to person payments are explicitly excluded in most offer terms.
What if my direct deposit posted but the bonus did not?
Wait out the stated payout window, then send a secure message with a screenshot of the posted deposit and the offer terms. Many bonuses are paid manually after that request.
